Best practice at scale takes more than managers.
It takes a wider community of people, organizations, and supporters. We keep an open tent for everyone working toward true best-practice management at scale.
At heart, Big Ocean is a community of practitioners: the people who manage the world's largest ocean places, and those who stand with them. We work by reciprocity, practitioners helping practitioners, sharing generously what each has learned so no one has to face the hardest problems alone.
Our Big Ocean
A short film made with the Blue Nature Alliance at the Ocean Managers XChange, where managers from seventeen countries gathered to learn from one another.
The people the work depends on
- The managers and their teams who hold large ocean places.
- The wider community of practitioners — scientists, policy specialists, and allied organizations Big Ocean stands among.
- Funders and agencies investing in durable ocean protection.
- Indigenous communities and organizations whose kinship with these waters reaches back generations, and who hold and lead many of these places.
- The people building protection on the high seas, where the field's lessons are needed next.
Supported across time
Our work has been made possible by partners and supporters across our history. Some have stood with Big Ocean since its inaugural gathering; others joined as the field of large-scale marine protection gathered momentum. As the very definition of scale expands, the tent only widens.
